JAMESTOWN — Pitching has been the driving force behind Dickinson’s recent surge, but on Tuesday the Roughriders added some offense to the mix and produced a recipe for disaster for Jamestown Post 14.
The Roughriders combined to score 25 runs in two games to sweep Jamestown 14-1 and 11-0 in an American Legion doubleheader at Jack Brown Stadium. Dickinson has now won five of its last six games.
Dickinson starter Korey Kallenbach had the offense to back him up in Game 1, but Jamestown’s ongoing offensive woes at home allowed the Roughriders to cruise to a convincing six-inning victory.
Kallenbach gave up just one run in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the victory from the hill. The Roughriders’ right-hander gave up nine hits and struck out three.
“We’ve been preaching pitching and defense, pitching and defense,” said Dickinson coach Andy Emard. “The offense, once you start to build a little lead, it does become contagious, but we didn’t have any errors in the first game and the pitchers are able to build off that.”
Jordan Tescher led the way for Dickinson going 5-for-5 with 5 RBIs a home run and double.
“This was kind of a breakout day for him. It was nice to see,” said Emard. “He hasn’t really gotten in a groove yet (this season), so it was good to see him take some good swings today and really hit some balls hard.”
The right-handed slugger led off the sixth with a round-tripper and then delivered an RBI single later in the inning to put the Roughriders ahead 14-0.
Jamestown didn’t advance a runner past second base until the bottom of the sixth when Riley Schafer drove in the Eagles’ lone run with a groundout to shortstop.
“We seemed to be just one hit away,” Jamestown coach Shane Schoeneberg said. “We had quite a few hits and our outs were a lot of hard-hit outs.”
Schafer struggled from the hill for Jamestown, especially against the top of Dickinson’s lineup, as he suffered the loss. The first three batters on the Roughriders’ scorecard teamed up to go 12-for-14 with 6 RBIs and five runs scored.
Brett Braunagel went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot for Dickinson (11-15 overall, 6-7 statewide) including a double and an RBI single in the sixth.
Teammate Sean Kelly had two RBIs, both coming on a single up the middle in the sixth, and Aaron Berg went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third of Game 2, Dickinson starter Kelly got a groundout for a double play to end the inning and leave Jamestown scoreless.
Despite only being midway through the game, the two-out turn made the biggest impact in the nightcap.
From there, Jamestown was held to just two hits the rest of the way and no runner advanced past second base as the Roughriders completed their sweep with their second straight six-inning victory.
“We’re not a team that’s going to strike a lot of people out,” said Emard. “We don’t have the guys that are going to blow it by people, but they’ve got good enough stuff where they can keep us in the game and give our defense a chance.”
Dickinson — which led just 2-0 after four innings — used another sixth-inning rally to bury the Eagles into an insurmountable hole.
Grant Dvorak hit a two-run homer following Tescher’s double to spark the inning, but aggressive base-running and patient at-bats kept the rally alive.
Dickinson drew four walks and scored on two wild pitches to put up four more runs and jumped out to a commanding 11-0 lead.
“Once you get the pitching and defense down, I think you have a little more freedom at the plate,” Emard said. “I think the guys felt a little more relaxed out there because it’s a lot easier to hit what you’re in those situations.”
Tescher scored three of the Roughriders’ runs after going 2-for-2 from the plate with two doubles and a RBI. Berg went 1-for-2 with a RBI, while both Braunagel and Brady Dutchak each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Eagles (7-14-1 overall, 1-9 statewide) were held to just three hits with Danny Fischer connecting on the only extra-base hit — a double in the sixth.
Stilwell, who was saddled with the loss, allowed five runs — three earned — over four-plus innings.
Kelly earned the win after scattering three hits over six innings. The Roughriders’ right-hander finished the game with two strikeouts and got eight groundball outs behind him.
“He kept us off-balanced,” Schoeneberg said. “I thought he had a pretty decent changeup and he seemed to be spotting his fastball.”
Dickinson hosts Mandan in a nine-inning game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Southside Municipal Ballpark.
