900 gallons of oil spill into Missouri River in ND

WILLISTON (AP) — A Health Department official says floodwaters shifted a storage tank and caused the spill of about 900 gallons of oil into the Missouri River in northwestern North Dakota.

WILLISTON (AP) — A Health Department official says floodwaters shifted a storage tank and caused the spill of about 900 gallons of oil into the Missouri River in northwestern North Dakota.

Environmental geologist Kris Roberts said that the situation can't be fully investigated until the floodwaters recede but he says he thinks "we dodged a bullet."

The tank is at a well site owned by Ryan Exploration Inc. It's among about 40 on the floodplain between Williston and Trenton that were shut down under state orders when the river started rising in May.

Well owner Tim Ryan estimates cleanup could cost half a million dollars.

The spill is much smaller than an estimated 42,000-gallon spill from a ruptured pipeline two weeks ago into the Yellowstone River in Montana.
