ND reports first case of West Nile virus in 2011

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health says the state has identified its first case of West Nile virus for the year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health says the state has identified its first case of West Nile virus for the year.

The patient, who was not hospitalized, is a male between the ages of 10 and 19. He lives in Towner County.

The infection is spread through mosquitos.

West Nile Virus Program Manager Michelle Feist says in a news release that the number of the mosquitos trapped that spread the virus has increased in the state.

In 2010, nine human cases of West Nile virus were reported to the Department of Health. West Nile was also identified in two horses, one dog and one reindeer.
