North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz has ordered a preliminary review of the Dickinson State University athletic department.
Debra Anderson, the director of public affairs and marketing for the North Dakota University System, said Wednesday afternoon that the process is under way.
“No formal directive has been issued by the chancellor, other than that he has requested a preliminary review to be done and that that process is under way,” Anderson said. “I can’t tell you what that will lead to.”
Anderson said she could not comment on what the review will entail.
“I would see it as a less formal process at this point,” she said.
The news comes just days after the NDUS asked DSU President Richard McCallum to resign.
It is unclear why the review is being conducted.
However, in December, the National Association
Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) placed the DSU volleyball program and then-head coach Ryan Platt on probation through the 2011-12 school year for violations committed by Platt during the 2010 season. Platt resigned from the university in December after three seasons as head coach.
The violations involved inappropriate conduct and the use of ineligible players.
The NAIA would not go into detail on the specifics of the violations.
“With regard to any violations, information is always kept between the member institution and association,” Staci Schottman, the NAIA’s director of public relations and communications, said Wednesday in an email to The Dickinson Press.
DSU athletic director Tim Daniel said he could not comment because he had not been informed that an athletic department review would be conducted by the NDUS.
