DSU President Richard McCallum's attorney questions inquiry

FARGO (AP) — The attorney for fired Dickinson State president Richard McCallum is questioning the timing of an investigation into the school's athletic department.

FARGO (AP) — The attorney for fired Dickinson State president Richard McCallum is questioning the timing of an investigation into the school's athletic department.

North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz has ordered a preliminary review of the department. It comes after Goetz gave McCallum his termination notice over allegations of inflated enrollment numbers at the college.

Fargo attorney Ben Thomas says the inquiry into athletics raises the question of whether the investigation is an attempt to justify a firing that “on its face, seem unjustified.”

McCallum has filed a formal request with higher education officials to review the firing.

A spokesman for Goetz says the chancellor is on annual leave and unavailable for comment.
