JAMESTOWN — The Dickinson cross country team got its season off to a good start Friday at the Orriginals Invitational at McElroy Park.
Dickinson’s top five girls ran in a pack separated by just 23 seconds en route to a fourth-place finish.
The Midget boys, paced by seniors Vlad Kutka and Joseph Sickler, finished fifth.
“We were pleased with our finish. We have work to do, but we’re really proud of the seniors,” Dickinson coach Shawn Leiss said.
Kutka took fourth in the boys race with a time of 17 minutes, 13 seconds. Sickler ran a 17:36. Fargo Davies’ Brandon Scheel won the race in 16:52.
Jackson Binstock had a 12th-place finish with a time of 17:47.1. Zachary Obrigewitch (48th, 19:03) and Austin Mack (52nd, 19:07) rounded out Dickinson’s top five.
“The boys came off the line and ran really hard,” Leiss said. “Maybe started a little too quick even, but at least they went out and got after it.”
Meleah Leiss finished 23rd to pace Dickinson’s girls. She had a time of 17:23 and passed Emily Tyrrell (24th, 17:26) and Whitney Schatz (26th, 17:29) in the final 100 meters to capture the top time on the team.
“We finished in a real nice pack,” Leiss said. “At different times, different girls were leading it for us.”
Twins Kelli and Katie Pavlicek rounded out Dickinson’s top five with times of 17:35 and 17:46, respectively.
“The good thing about that, really, is we were fairly close to each other as a pack,” Leiss said. “We’ve just got to get our whole pack to move up.”
Grand Forks Red River won the boys team race and Tarin Lachowitzer led the Fargo Davies girls to win with a winning time of 15:52.
Killdeer’s girls also competed at the meet, finishing 10th. Brooke Fettig’s 50th-place finish and time of 18:16 led the Cowboys.
