FARGO — With so many players returning from last year, North Dakota State put some proof into its deeper roster. Head coach Craig Bohl said Saturday that as of now fullback Berkley Grimm may be the only true freshman to play right away. And that’s not a certainty, either.

The 5-foot-11, 233-pound Grimm, from Iowa City, Iowa, would dress if the Bison played a game today but not necessarily play to preserve his redshirt. There isn’t a lot of proven depth at fullback behind sophomore starter Andrew Grothmann.

It’s almost a direct contrast to this time last year when NDSU already pulled the redshirts off of a few players. In all, seven true freshmen played during the season.

Bohl said true freshman Carson Wentz will open the season as the No. 3 quarterback, at least until senior Dante Perez returns from an oblique injury. The hope is for Wentz to retain his redshirt status and be used only in an emergency, Bohl said.

Wentz was in a battle with freshman Ryan Stanford for the No. 3 job. Wentz threw a touchdown pass to tight end Kevin Vaadeland and finished 4 of 6 passing for 43 yards in the scrimmage, which will be NDSU’s only one during fall practice. The season opens in two weeks at home against Lafayette (Pa.).

Six captains were named on Saturday, all seniors: linebacker Preston Evans, defensive end Coulter Boyer, safety Daniel Eaves, tight end Matt Veldman, offensive tackle Paul Cornick and running back D.J. McNorton.
