Texas man killed in head-on crash with semi north of Dickinson

A Texas man was killed and three others injured in a head-on crash with a semi on Highway 22 this morning.

A Texas man was killed and three others injured in a head-on crash with a semi on Highway 22 this morning.

Michael Williams II, 19 of Mississippi, passed a vehicle about 8 miles north of Dickinson, which struck Dickinson resident Jamie Merkel’s semi head-on at about 5 a.m.

“It was extremely foggy and Williams decided to pass when he shouldn’t of due to the low visibility,” North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Haugen said.

Williams’ vehicle slid into the ditch.

Merkel was not injured. However, Williams and two of his passengers, Derek Moore and Michael Lary, both of Texas, were transported to the hospital with injuries. Another Texas resident, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There were two other minor non-injury crashes this morning but they were not fog-related, Haugen said. One was on Interstate 94 east of Dickinson and the other was near Belfield, he said.
