Supporters outnumber opponents at Glendive, Mont. pipeline hearing

GLENDIVE, Mont. (AP) — Supporters outnumbered opponents at an eastern Montana meeting held to take public comment on a proposed pipeline that would carry Canadian crude to oil refineries in Texas.

GLENDIVE, Mont. (AP) — Supporters outnumbered opponents at an eastern Montana meeting held to take public comment on a proposed pipeline that would carry Canadian crude to oil refineries in Texas.

Proponents said TransCanada's pipeline would create up to 20,000 jobs and give a boost to local economies and tax bases. Opponents argued the job numbers are inflated and the risks of environmental damage due to spills are high.

Comments made Tuesday night in Glendive will be forwarded to the State Department, which is determining whether the Keystone XL pipeline "is in the national interest" and should receive a presidential permit.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer supports the pipeline, which would run through six counties in Montana. Schweitzer helped negotiate an on-ramp near Baker that could load oil from Montana and North Dakota.
