Tiny ND town bans man camps

Almont officials have approved an ordinance that would prevent the construction of temporary oil worker housing.

ALMONT, N.D. (AP) — Almont officials have approved an ordinance that would prevent the construction of temporary oil worker housing.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/reWfYa ) that the city council on Monday banned the so-called man camps, fearing the facilities would overwhelm local resources.

City Auditor Lynne Jacobson says the move was prompted by the purchase of a school building that was rumored to be converted into dormitory-style housing for oil workers.

Jacobson says Almont is too small to host large numbers of workers. The town of about 80 people has no full-time police officer and no businesses that provide laundry, meals or other support services.
