Dickinson’s swimmers got their one chance of the season to swim at home and they didn’t disappoint.

The Williston and Dickinson co-op took home top honors at the Williston-Dickinson Invitational on Saturday at the West River Community Center.

“Swimming at home is exciting, because they know the pool and it just gives them confidence,” said Krist Roller, coach of Dickinson’s side of the co-op. “They swam really well. Most of them cut times.”

The Coyotes posted 456 points, edging Minot’s 431. Mandan had 345.

“It’s nice to get wins at home, just like any other sport,” said Alexa Martel, a Dickinson High senior. “When you get wins at home, people recognize you more, because they know you.”

Though winning at home was fun for the eight Dickinson girls who comprise the co-op with Williston. Cutting down on times was the message across the board.

“I thought we did really well,” Williston head coach Thomas Wheeling said. “I actually wasn’t sure we’d take this meet. We were swimming all of our strong events. It was a nice surprise to see some of the girls cut some time and the others stayed pretty consistent with their times.”

The Coyotes’ times improved throughout the meet, which may be a little unusual at this point in the season.

“We’re still coming off some of our high yardage weeks,” Wheeling said. “It’s surprising to see them cut some time. Usually they will stay pretty consistent as we start to tapper down. A time cut is always good to see, no matter what time of the season it is.”

Ketti Ringwall, a Dickinson Trinity sophomore, grabbed one first place and three second-place finishes. Ringwall helped the 200-yard medley relay team win in a time of 1 minute, 58.51 seconds.

“It gives us a good feeling to know all the hard work we’ve been doing is starting to show,” Ringwall said. “During practice we’re like ‘Oh my gosh, this is horrible.’ When we come to meets and we all do well, it helps to see we are doing the right things.”

Bryn Everson aided the 200 medley relay win and placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.75. Everson also took second in the 50 yard freestyle (26.24 seconds).

“We did amazing,” Martel said. We’ve been putting in a lot of effort and we are finally starting to see it pay off.”

Martel cut time in each event, helping her place second twice, in the 400 freestyle relay (3:52.04) and 500 freestyle (5:42.61). She also took fourth in the 50 freestyle (27.42).

“The goal is to cut as much time as you can,” she said. “So if you cut a little bit each time it starts to add up at the end of the season.”

The Coyotes also saw individual wins from Shantha Trottier in the 1-meter dive (408.55 points), Katie Tkachyk in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.87).

“They are still working really hard and we are doing a lot of yards in practice,” Roller said. “Them cutting time is pretty impressive.

“I was very satisfied with their times. I can’t wait until the next meet to see how they do.”
