FARGO — Dickinson High knew the Class A state boys cross country meet was a race for second place.
So, the Midgets went out and won that runner-up trophy.
Nationally ranked Bismarck High, considered one of the nation’s top teams, won its seventh consecutive state championship with its top five runners placing in the top six. The Demons had 17 team points.
Bismarck’s Jake Leingang won his second straight individual title in 14 minutes, 59.80 seconds. He beat runner-up Lane Kashur, his teammate, by more than 45 seconds.
Vlad Kutka and Jackson Binstock had all-state finishes for the Midgets, as each finished in the top 20.
Kukta had a ninth-place finish in a time of 16:21.43 to lead the Midgets, who had 125 team points. Binstock was 18th in 16:39.63.
“Vlad stepped up and acted like a senior leader,” Dickinson head coach Shawn Leiss said. He went out and got the job done, ran with confidence. He really helped set the tone for Dickinson High School cross country.”
Leiss said a fifth-place finish at the West Region meet was a wake-up call to the boys.
“That helped our guys develop a sense of urgency,” Leiss said. “They knew they had a job to do, and they came to compete this time.”
Michael Porter (21st, 16:50.58), Joseph Sickler (29th, 17:05.42) and Collin Bren (48th, 17:29.67) rounded out Dickinson’s team scoring. Porter missed all-state honors by 2.2 seconds.
Still, eight of Dickinson’s 10 runners set personal-best times.
“That’s kind of what we were looking for,” Leiss said.
Dickinson’s girls didn’t fair so well.
The Midgets finished 11th with Meleah Leiss leading the way with a time of 15:49.70.
Emily Tyrell (39th, 16:01.38), Kelli Pavlicek (66th, 16:27.67), Shannon Stockert (83rd, 16:43.12) and Morgan Kuntz (85th, 16:44.34) made up the rest of Dickinson’s team scoring.
“We don’t feel awfully bad about it. We’re a little bit disappointed, obviously,” Shawn Leiss said. “I think we could have finished better. I still think if our girls had another attempt, we could finish better.”
Tarin Lachowitzer led Fargo Davies to its second consecutive state championship with a winning time of 14:16.62. She edged Jamestown’s Allison Allmer by less than 3 seconds.
Palczewski leads Bulldogs
Bowman County junior Michael Palczewski finished 11th with a time of 17:55.9 to help his team to an eighth-place finish in the Class B boys race.
Beulah-Hazen finished sixth as a team. Beach’s Danny Skoglund finished 38th in 18:49.8.
Killdeer finished 10th in the Class B girls race. The Cowboys were led by senior Skye Schaper’s 38th-place finish of 16:53.4.
