A gift of dictionaries

The third-graders at Trinity Elementary West looked up the word “bear” in their new dictionaries.

They learned the word had multiple meanings, in addition to the common definition of a woodland animal.

The exercise was conducted by Rotary Club members, Dennis Cannon and Glenice Hansen. The members, along with other Rotary Club volunteers, gave dictionaries to every third-grader in Dickinson on Thursday morning.

It’s one of Rotary’s community projects, said coordinator Don Bares.

“It’s rewarding for them and for me,” he said. “It’s really neat to see their eyes light up and they can hardly believe we are giving them their own dictionary.”

Trinity West third-grade teacher Joleen Praus said the gift of dictionaries came while the students were learning to write books as a classroom assignment.

“They have their own dictionaries to be able to look up the verbs they need for the stories that they are writing,” she said.
