Kaine Hanson wasn’t getting many looks in the first quarter.
Finally, with 2.3 seconds left, he banked in a put-back shot in the post, was fouled in the process and let loose an emphatic first pump.
It proved to be the emotional boost the New England boys basketball team was looking for Thursday night in its Roughrider Tournament semifinal game against Heart River.
Hanson went on to game highs of 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead the Tigers to their second consecutive Roughrider championship game with a 51-42 victory at Knights of Columbus Activities Center.
“It feels good to get in the championship back-to-back years,” said Hanson, a 6-foot-4 senior forward. “New England hasn’t had this good of seasons for a while now.”
The Tigers (4-1) face Dickinson Trinity (3-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the title. New England has only reached consecutive title games twice in the 41 years of the tournament (2002 and 2003, 1994 and 1995) and has never won back-to-back titles.
The Tigers, especially senior guard Nick Wolf, fed off Hanson’s three-point play at the end of the first quarter.
Wolf scored the Tigers’ first six points of the second quarter as they took a 19-8 lead.
Hanson got into the act more, too. He hit a 3-pointer and buried a fade-away jumper as the shot clock expired late in the quarter that put the Tigers up 27-16. New England led 29-19 at halftime.
“That’s a pretty typical game for Kaine Hanson,” Tigers head coach Luke Powers said. “He’s a great player. I think he’s one of the best players in the region. He’s going to come out and sometimes we’re going to rely on him. What’s nice about our team is we’re balanced.”
Wolf finished with 16 points and Clarence Binstock added nine points, five assists and four rebounds.
The Cougars (2-1), meanwhile, struggled to get much going offensively.
While both teams shot 42 percent from the field — New England was 19 of 45 while Heart River was 18 of 43 — Cougars head coach Greg Pruitt was displeased with his team’s overall offensive performance.
That and the Cougars’ 2-of-13 performance from the free-throw line, where they made their only two in the first 11 minutes of the game and missed the next 11 attempts.
“We wanted to try to control the possession of the game,” Pruitt said. “When we had a possession, we wanted to get a good look. That didn’t happen. It seemed like we were rushing shots, or we were a little bit stale on offense. We couldn’t find the in-between part.”
Senior forward Jordan Strecker led Heart River with 12 points and added five rebounds while Isaiah Marschner had nine points and 10 boards.
The fourth quarter was the Cougars’ best as they outscored New England 17-12.
Heart River takes on Mott-Regent at 6 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game.
“I just felt that the kids played hard at the end of the game and I was proud of them for that,” Pruitt said. “We’ve got to look on to the next game.”
