Tyler Steffan’s breakout season has earned him the highest honor of his career.

Steffan became the first University of Mary player selected to the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America team on Tuesday.

“This is something you dream of when you play college sports,” he said.

The 6-foot-5 junior wide receiver from Dickinson led NCAA Division II with 17 receiving touchdowns. He had 914 yards receiving on 54 catches, averaging 16.9 yards per reception.

During the 2011 season, Steffan established a single-season school record for touchdown receptions, set a U-Mary single-game records for touchdown receptions in a game by twice catching four. Steffan also tied U-Mary’s single-game record for total touchdowns.

“When you have a good season, you like to be rewarded,” Steffan said. “When you have a good enough year to even be considered for All-America is good enough, the way I see it.

“When you’re named All-America, you’re one of two receivers in the nation that are tagged at that position on that team. It’s unbelievable. It’s awesome.”

With only the D-II national championship game left to be played, Steffan ranks 15th in the nation in scoring and finished as the NSIC leader in touchdowns. Steffan finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in receptions and receiving yardage.

Steffan has also been selected to the all-NSIC first team and D-II all-Super Region 3 first team.

“I’m extremely excited,” Steffan said. “It’s just one of those things. It’s a great accomplishments, but it doesn’t go undeserving of the team too. … I’ve got to give a big thanks to all those guys that helped me, too.”
