The Steffans are an All-America family.

Dickinson native Katelyn Steffan was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-America team Wednesday as a third-team selection one day after her cousin Tyler Steffan was named to the NCAA Division II All-America football team for his standout season at the University of Mary.

It was highest honor of Steffan’s career at Colorado State and came on the heels of the 6-foot-4 senior outside hitter’s career-best season.

Steffan was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year after switching from middle hitter to left side. She led the Rams and was second in the Mountain West in kills and points per set while placing in the top 10 in the conference in blocks.

“I really am speechless,” Steffan said in a press release. “It’s a huge honor and something I dreamt about when I got to CSU. I remember having a meeting with (Rams head coach) Tom (Hilbert) as a freshman and I told him I wanted to be an All-American.”

Steffan and her Colorado State teammate, junior middle blocker Megan Plourde, were both selected to the third team.

As the Rams’ captain and only senior, Steffan led her team in kills 18 times, including a career-high 28 twice.

She was named the Mountain West Player of the Week twice in three weeks during October, and earned three tournament Most Valuable Player honors, including being named the Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP after leading the Rams to their third consecutive conference championship.

“Kate is the epitome of a great all-around player,” Hilbert said. “She’s good at each statistical category.”

Steffan and Plourde will be honored Friday at the AVCA All-America and Players of the Year Banquet in San Antonio, Texas.
