With two frontcourt starters injured, the Dickinson State women’s basketball team may have to live and die by the 3-pointer. That’s what it did Thursday night.
The Blue Hawks shrugged off an icy cold first-half shooting performance with a hot start in the second half that helped them build an edge that led to a 68-59 victory over the University of Winnipeg (Manitoba) at Scott Gymnasium.
“We’ve just got to keep battling,” DSU head coach Andre Goldberg said. “At times we did. At times I didn’t think we were great.”
The Blue Hawks didn’t have a great shooting night overall. Though they shot 41 percent from the field, they were just 9 of 33 from 3-point range. DSU hit 3 of 18 3-pointers in the first half and was 2 of 11 aside from the four consecutive 3s it made in the opening 3 minutes of the second half.
That short outburst made a big difference, however. It gave the Blue Hawks a 45-32 lead — the biggest they’d hold all game — and gave them momentum early in the second half.
Ashley Jelly made all three of her 3-pointers during the span.
Yianna Nadeau led DSU with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Jelly, Kylee Bittner and Jessica Nieves, who also hit three 3-pointers, each added 11 points for the Blue Hawks (5-10).
“Our shots are there, they’re going to fall,” Nadeau said. “That’s not a big problem, but taking care of the ball is one of our main problems we have right now.”
While DSU outrebounded Winnipeg 45-40, the Blue Hawks committed 22 turnovers. It’s a number Goldberg said must decrease in their next two games.
DSU flies to Florida today to play two games in the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They face No. 3-ranked Briar Cliff (Iowa) at noon Sunday and John Brown University at 1 p.m. Monday.
“Twenty-two turnovers is too many, especially against not a whole lot of pressure,” Goldberg said. “We’ve got to do a better job taking care of it because we’re creating a lot of turnovers, forcing stuff. But we’ve got to do better taking care of it.”
Yael Kaplan led the way for Winnipeg (11-10), scoring 24 points. She had the Wesmen’s first nine points in the second half and helped her team keep pace with the Blue Hawks following their 3-point outburst.
“She was never really a scorer in her career,” Winnipeg head coach Tanya McKay said. “She can score, but I think she’s realizing she’s a scorer. That’s different. She’s figuring out her game.”
