BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Public Service Commission is seeking $3.9 million to continue reclamation work on two abandoned coal mines.
A federal agency distributes the money. It comes from taxes on the coal industry.
The mines in Burke and Mercer counties went out of business years before federal and state law required them to be reclaimed for farming and ranching use.
Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer says the Burke County mine has “high walls” that were left over from the open-pit mine. He says the walls are up to 70 feet high and can be dangerous to passersby and livestock.
The abandoned Mercer County mine is being filled in with grout to guard against collapsing soil and sinkholes.
The projects will begin this spring.
