Linton-HMB ends Trinity’s unbeaten season

BISMARCK — The Dickinson Trinity boys basketball team found themselves in an unusual place Saturday — the loss column.

The No. 4-ranked Titans’ undefeated season ended as Linton-HMB scored a 59-55 upset win at the Bismarck Civic Center Jamboree.

“Hopefully this will be a learning experience,” Trinity head coach Gregg Grinsteinner said. “I told the kids you have one of two choices. You can either learn from your mistakes or we can say we aren’t going to get any better. I know this group of kids and they want to get better.”

Linton led by as much as 15 points in the third and fourth quarters. Trinity managed to cut the deficit to one late, but couldn’t finish.

“They (Linton) played extremely well and we struggled,” Grinsteinner said. “It was a day of adversity.”

The Titans played without senior forward Dylan Fridrich after he broke his nose in the second quarter.

“Playing without him, we played with a lot of foul problems,” Grinsteinner said.

Jacob Volk led the Titans (12-1) with 11 points and three blocks. Christian Olson added 10 points, while Mason Schiff had nine.

Linton’s leader was Tanner Purintun with 23 points, followed by Ryan Dralle with 13. Nathan Weiser supplied 10 points for the Lions (9-4).

Trinity travels to unbeaten and No. 8-ranked Hazen (12-0) on Tuesday to decide the No. 1 seed in District 14. Grinsteinner said he knows his team will be ready.

“They are hungry and they know it’s going to be a big game in Hazen for the No. 1 seed in the district,” he said. “We are going to have our kids playing.”
