The Dickinson State wrestling team made quick work of Jamestown College on Wednesday.

But that’s not much of a knock on the Jimmies, who had just three wrestlers for the dual between the NAIA North Region rivals. Because of seven open weight classes, Jamestown surrendered a 52-6 defeat to the Blue Hawks.

DSU got a pin from Clayton Steinmetz at 133 pounds and a major decision from Manny Reyes, who bumped up a weight to 165.

“They were a pretty solid team at the beginning of the year and then they lost some kids at semester time,” DSU head coach Thadd O’Donnell said. “Then they had a rash of injuries the last couple weeks. Wrestling is a little different than basketball where you can put some guys in there. Here, you have to find specific guys for specific weights. It’s kind of hard to do that, especially when you don’t have large numbers.”

The Jimmies’ lone points came from Jaykob Miller, who pinned DSU’s Jake Sherburne in 5 minutes, 32 seconds at 157 pounds following a late surge.

Steinmetz got the shortened dual off to a fast start, pinning Daniel Taylor in just 54 seconds.

Reyes ended it scoring multiple takedowns in the third period to tag Johnathon Gonzalez with a 16-7 major decision.

“He did a good job,” O’Donnell said. “He’s gaining more confidence, he just needs to get more confidence on the mat. It was good to see. You definitely could tell, he got more confident in the second period, was cutting him and looking for the major.”

There were two exhibition matches, which the teams split.

Jamestown’s Sam Brown pinned Jason Armitage in 1:48 at 157 pounds and DSU’s Jeremiah Hayes pinned Tyler Schnaubert in 3:55 at 149.

The Blue Hawks used the dual as a tune-up for tonight’s dual at Minot State.

“It’s one we’ve got to be ready for,” O’Donnell said. “That’s going to be a tight dual. Hopefully it’s a tight dual. It’s good preparation for us tonight.”
