MANDAN — Two things that keep bothering the Dickinson High girls basketball team reared their ugly heads again Thursday night.
The Midgets struggled with turnovers and gave up a double-digit run to Mandan late in the first half, which helped the No. 4-ranked Braves pull away en route to a 65-51 West Region victory.
“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Dickinson head coach Dan Pender said. “That’s our nemesis right now.”
The Midgets and Braves were battling early until Dickinson turnovers led to Mandan’s run.
“We were playing well, we really were,” Pender said. “We were breaking their press right away. … We just made some silly passes.”
Michaela Longtin led the Braves (8-2, 6-1 West) with 18 points. Keela Burt added 11 points and Alexis Goldade, Elizabeth Meyer and Jaelyn Russell each hit double figures with 10 points.
No one scored in double figures for the Midgets (1-8, 0-7 West).
Junior Rachel Schroeder and senior Leslie Beaudoin, in her first game back from a suspension for breaking team rules, each scored nine points to lead Dickinson. Schroeder grabbed eight rebounds and had a pair of blocks.
However, Pender was pleased with their offensive performance as they shot 21 of 51 (41 percent) from the field and 6 of 9 from the free-throw line.
“We need to get to the free-throw line a little more than nine times too,” Pender said. “That’s just being aggressive. I’m proud of how our girls played tonight.”
