BISMARCK — The Dickinson High boys basketball team nearly pulled off an upset over West Region opponent Bismarck Century.

BISMARCK — The Dickinson High boys basketball team nearly pulled off an upset over West Region opponent Bismarck Century.

Tom Fraase drained a 3-pointer in the corner with less than 20 seconds left in the game and the Patriots held on for the 55-54 win over Dickinson on Thursday.

“We played very good defensively,” Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. “I thought we were able to keep them on their heels all night long. I walked off the court extremely proud of our kids.”

Midgets senior Jon Wanner took the final jump shot with 4.5 seconds left in the game. The ball bounced off the front of rim.

“We had a look,” Wilson said. “It just rimmed off the front of it.”

Dickinson’s (3-8, 1-8 West) close win was another in a long line of positive momentum boosts the team has found late in the season.

“We have nothing to lose and they kids are just excited to play,” Wilson said. “We can’t control what’s happened in the past. We can only move on and learn from it.”

Fraase led Century (8-4, 6-4 West) with 21 points on five 3-pointers. Andre Maund added 11, while Zach Rhone had 10. Rhone grabbed a game-high six rebounds and Maund dished out five assists.

Jesse Kessel powered the Midgets’ offense with 19 points. He added five rebounds and five assists. No other player Dickinson player scored in double-figures, but Wilson said there was a good distribution in points.

“Jesse led us with 19 points, but we had a fair good balance the rest of the way around,” Wilson said. “It was a time where we played as a team. They deserved to win the game tonight.”

Wilson hopes his team can play strong again when it hosts West Region opponent Bismarck St. Mary’s at 7:30 p.m. today.

“I told them what they had for breakfast, whatever they wore, whatever they did today,” Wilson said. “Let’s see if we can do it against Bismarck St. Mary’s.”
