Berger leads DHS to strong showing in SD

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — The Dickinson High wrestling team finished the Belle Fourche (S.D.) Tournament on Saturday with one individual champion and nine other placers.
The Midgets took third as a team with 152.5 points. Sturgis (S.D.) won the tournament easily with a score of 252.
Devin Berger was Dickinson’s lone individual champion at 120 pounds. The sophomore defeated Douglas (S.D.) senior Justin Taul by an 8-3 decision.
The Midgets’ other wrestler that made it to the finals was 220-pound sophomore Chris Sickler. He was pinned by Josh Hunt of Douglas in 2 minutes, 45 seconds.
Dickinson had three wrestlers finish third. Alec Lindsey defeated teammate Ryder Peterson in a 2-0 decision at 138.
Bryton Brien (126) grabbed third place with a win over Tyler Paul from Upton, Wyo., while Jade Dirk (170) took a 6-1 decision over Douglas’ Jordan Hunt.
Peterson and Austin Hutzenbiler (106) were fourth. Matt Berg (138) notched fifth. Thomas McCarty (182) and Michael Cherwinski (152) took sixth.
“We’ve been wrestling well as a team for duals and we’ve had some tough tournaments throughout the year,” Dickinson head coach Bruce Heppner said. “We haven’t gone to actually any easy tournaments. Coming away with this many placers is huge.”
