MAYVILLE — The Dickinson State men’s basketball team needed a win and Tevin Hurd helped deliver one.
Hurd scored a team-high 31 points to lead the Blue Hawks past Mayville State 71-64 on Wednesday to snap a four-game losing skid.
“Tevin’s really attacking well and playing smart,” DSU head coach Ty Orton said. “The kids just played a great game. They were calm, they were confident and moved it all around.”
The senior forward went 12 of 15 from the free-throw line and 9 of 21 from the field.
DSU (9-15, 1-1 DAC) spent a majority of the game without Casper Hesseldal and Matthew Lee because of foul trouble.
“We played a lot of guys that came off the bench in the first half,” Orton said.
Hesseldal ended with 11 points and five rebounds, while Lee added seven points and nine rebounds. One of those players that came off the bench was senior Pierce Brooks with seven points.
The win definitely puts Orton’s mind at ease after losing the last four games by a total of 15 points.
“I think Mayville’s as good as they’ve been in a while,” Orton said. “I think for us to go on the road and play like we did just shows that the kids have a lot of fight in them and they want to keep going.”
Mayville State (12-11, 0-2 DAC) was led by Eric Shulstad with 19 points and seven rebounds. Bryen Pyles chipped in 13 points.
The Blue Hawks travel back east to play Jamestown College at 6:30 p.m. MST on Saturday.
