A Rhame boy died Sunday after an ATV accident, Bowman County Sheriff Rory Teigen said on Monday.
Teigen added that 4-year-old Calvin Steeke was found in his family’s front yard, and a call for an ambulance was sent at 11:57 a.m. Steeke was rushed to Southwest Healthcare Hospital minutes after the accident, Teigen said.
Trevor Steeke, Calvin’s father, said his family has “had better days.” He hopes area farmers and ranchers can learn from the accident.
“If you got young kids, young grandkids, give them an extra hug because they might not be with you tomorrow, or in an hour,” Steeke said. “One day you’re having breakfast with them, and the next day he’s gone.”
Steeke added that the family donated Calvin’s organs, and a heart valve was given to a patient on Sunday.
Southwest Medical Clinic Manager Tina Marmon said she does not know who received the heart valve, adding that specialists transported the tissue out of the hospital.
“It isn’t anybody that’s here,” Marmon said.
Marmon also said she knew Calvin and sympathizes with his family.
“I have children myself that rodeo with their kids in the summertime,” she said. “I think it’s horrible what they’re experiencing, and I wish them well.”
Funeral services for Calvin will take place at the Scranton Public School gymnasium at 1 p.m. Thursday. There will be a separate service for his family and friends at the Bowman Lutheran Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
