BISMARCK — Jesse Kessel had a career night, but it wasn’t enough for the Dickinson High boys basketball team to defeat No. 2-ranked Bismarck High.

Dexter Werner scored 26 points and had 16 points as the Demons rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to defeat the Midgets 78-63 in a West Region game at Karlgaard Gymnasium.

“We couldn’t box him out, so we went to man and we couldn’t handle him in man,” Dickinson High head coach John Wilson said of the 6-foot-5 Werner. “He was just overpowering us.”

Kessel had a career-high 28 points, going 6 of 7 from 3-point range, to lead the Midgets (4-11, 2-11 West). Jordan Krieg added 13 points and seven boards for Dickinson.

“Jesse had a great game,” Wilson said.

Devin Schirado scored 17 points, Jaxon Fitterer had 13 and Tyler Schafer added 11 for the Demons (13-2, 11-1 West).

Dickinson has a day off before hosting Jamestown at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

“The kids haven’t given up,” Wilson said. “They battled extremely hard. Lady luck hasn’t been on our side. We just have a couple spurts in games where we just kind of fall apart a little bit.”
