Titans easily take care of Cowboys

From the opening tip to the final possession, the Dickinson Trinity boys basketball team controlled every facet of the Saturday’s game.
The No. 1 seed Titans jumped out to big lead en route to a 62-29 win over No. 4 seed Killdeer in the semifinals of the District 14 tournament at Knights of Columbus Activities Center.
“We did a much better job against their zone tonight than the first time we played them,” Trinity head coach Gregg Grinsteinner said. “I thought we had very good post passes, our turnovers were kept to a minimum and our kids made plays.”
Trinity punched a ticket to the district championship game and the Region 7 tournament without its top scorer, junior Jacob Volk, who is nursing an ankle injury.
The rest of Titans knew they had to fill the gap that he left.
“With Jacob (Volk) being out, we knew we all had to step up our game,” said junior Alex Binstock, who had a team-high 13 points. “We all needed to play a little bit tougher.”
The Titans played their first game at home since Jan. 3 and started the first quarter on a 17-2 run that lasted 5 minutes, 39 seconds. The main reason for the quick start was solid shooting and defensive pressure that defense kept the Cowboys at bay.
Binstock and senior Christian Olson, who added 10 points, played key roles.
“They (Trinity) came out hot,” Killdeer head coach Wayne Sanders said. “That always happens when we are playing them here and we came out flat. When you do that there’s not much you can do in a game.”
Trinity’s four main posts created open looks on the perimeter.
Binstock was 3 of 3 from 3-point range. The four post players, who combined for 31 points, were seniors Isiah Binstock, Dylan Fridrich, Austin Gawryluk and junior Jesse Kubik.
“They really make the zone collapse on them,” Alex Binstock said. “They get a lot of rebounds and they are the main reason why our offense flows usually.”
Gawryluk led the big guys with 10 points. Isiah Binstock and Fridrich each had eight points. Kubik added five.
Trinity’s defensive pressure never let up as it held the Cowboys to single digits in each quarter.
Tate Harris led Killdeer with 11 points.
“They probably have the best defense of anyone else in the state, as far as I’m concerned,” Sanders said. “Their pressure is relentless and never let up.”
The Titans relied on depth as their bench supplied 31 of 62 points in the game.
“Learning through experiences, you have to have kids stepping up,” Grinsteinner said. “You never know, during tournament time, who’s going to be healthy and who is going to be in foul problems.”
Trinity now faces Beulah for the District 14 championship at 7 p.m. Monday. Killdeer plays Glen Ullin-Hebron in a region-qualifier game at 5:30.
“I think it’s going to be an exciting game,” Grinsteinner said. “You want to go out and obviously win a championship, but our kids know we want to progressive get better. I think our kids are peaking at the right time of the year.”
