Midgets sending 15 to state tourney

JAMESTOWN — The Dickinson High wrestling team didn’t qualify for the team duals at the Class A state tournament, so the next best option was to send as many individuals as possible.

The Midgets achieved that goal, sending 15 of their 17 wrestlers to the state tournament. Dickinson finished seventh with 113 points at West Region tournament on Saturday.

“We went in there with a full lineup and we were confident that we could qualify all 17,” Dickinson head coach Bruce Heppner said. “Unfortunately we were two short.”

Bismarck won the West Region tournament with 238.5 points, followed by Williston with 190 and Belcourt notching 186.5. Dickinson was seventh at 113.

Dickinson’s senior captain Alec Lindsey at 138 pounds was the Midgets’ lone wrestler to reach the finals. He lost a 19-7 major decision to Bismarck’s Ryan Blees.

“Alec has had some ups and downs,” Heppner said. “The last month or so he’s started to peak.”

The Midgets had two wrestlers place third in the tournament. Austin Hutzenbiler (106) defeated Paxton Mewes of Jamestown in a 3-0 decision. Devin Berger (120) beat Bismarck’s Lane Kaseman 6-2.

Dickinson sophomore Michael Chewinski has struggled this season, but Heppner said he’s brought it together this last week. Cherwinski placed fourth (152).

The other Dickinson placers were Jaret Lee (113), Bryton Brien (126), Clay Tangen (145), Jace Dukart (160), Jacob Brooke (195), Chris Sickler (220) and Ashton Schatz (285).

The two wrestlers who didn’t reach the state tournament for Dickinson were seniors Jade Dirk (170) and Thomas McCarthy (182).
