Fossum wins West all-around; Midgets 2nd

JAMESTOWN — Dickinson eighth-grader Acacia Fossum won her first West Region all-around title, but the Midgets didn’t fare so well as a team. Minot High once again edged Dickinson in the team points, winning the West title with a score of 147.075.

JAMESTOWN — Dickinson eighth-grader Acacia Fossum won her first West Region all-around title, but the Midgets didn’t fare so well as a team.

Minot High once again edged Dickinson in the team points, winning the West title with a score of 147.075.

The Midgets ended with a 146.400 a week before they host the North Dakota state tournament.

“I think we learned some things and the girls, I think, are very determined,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “They’re not resigned to it. I think they’re excited about proving that they’re the best team.”

Fossum won the all-around with a 37.950 and the floor exercise in 9.825.

Fossum didn’t win the West Region meet last season but won the state meet’s all-around title.

“She’s a stronger gymnast this time and she was able to win the all-around,” Van Ells said.

Bismarck’s Mackenzie Keidel won the vault (9.700), Bismarck’s Kaylee Keller won the uneven bars (9.700) and Minot’s Payton Ringoen won the balance beam at 9.250.

Fossum was fourth on the vault, followed by teammate Keana Kudrna.

She was third on bars and sixth on beam.

Dickinson’s Mikaela Kessel and Jenna Mueller placed third and fourth on the beam with 9.225 and 9.200, respectively.

Shalesa Wariner placed 11th in the all-around (35.950) while Kudrna was 13th (35.700) to earn all-West Region nods.

Dickinson hasn’t defeated Minot for a while in a major meet, but Van Ells said this margin was one decided by only a handful of falls.

Van Ells said the Midgets are looking forward to the state meet and their final chance at the Majettes this season.

“I think they’re pretty determined,” Van Ells said. “I think they learned something and we’ll see if we can have that carry over the state meet this coming weekend.”
