District 14 girls basketball tournament: Hazen battles past Richardton-Taylor

HAZEN — Hazen got out to a big halftime lead and then had to rally in the fourth quarter to hold off Richardton-Taylor in the opening round of the District 14 girls basketball tournament.

HAZEN — Hazen got out to a big halftime lead and then had to rally in the fourth quarter to hold off Richardton-Taylor in the opening round of the District 14 girls basketball tournament.

Paige Burling had 17 points and seven rebounds as No. 4 seed Hazen earned a 45-41 victory over the No. 5 seed Raiders at the Bison Sports Arena to secure a date with top-seeded Beulah at 5 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Hazen jumped out to a 22-10 halftime lead, but watched Richardton-Taylor pile on the points in the third quarter to go ahead 31-29 at the end of the third quarter. The Bison outscored the Raiders 16-10 in the fourth.

Logan Olson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders. Halle Olson added nine points and 13 rebounds.

Morgan Karges added 10 points for the Bison. Haley Butterfield added eight points and four assists off the bench for Richardton-Taylor.

The Raiders play the loser of a semifinal game between Dickinson Trinity and Killdeer at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Senior Megan Klein went off for 27 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 3 seed Killdeer reach the semifinals.

Karen Schaaf hit three 3-pointers and had a team-high 17 points to lead the No. 6 seed Bearcats. Alyssa Wehri and Kari Gerving each had nine points.

The Bearcats shot 18 of 51 (35 percent) from the field.

The game was tied at 29 at halftime, but Killdeer exploded in the third quarter to take a 48-38 lead.

Heidi Ottmar added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals while Morgan LeMieux had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Cowboys, who shot 29 of 55 (53 percent) from the field.

Klein added four steals and blocked two shots for Killdeer, which plays Dickinson Trinity at 6:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Hebron-Glen Ullin plays the loser of a semifinal game between Beulah and Hazen at 5 p.m. Monday.
