District 13 girls basketball tournament: Cougars edge Wildfire

BOWMAN — Miranda Kadrmas had 20 points and nine rebounds as No. 4 seed Heart River held on to defeat No. 5 Mott-Regent in the opening round of the District 13 girls basketball tournament.

BOWMAN — Miranda Kadrmas had 20 points and nine rebounds as No. 4 seed Heart River held on to defeat No. 5 Mott-Regent in the opening round of the District 13 girls basketball tournament.

The Cougars moved on to the semifinals, where they’ll face No. 1 seed Beach, with a 40-37 victory Friday night at Solberg Gymnasium.

Heart River led by as much as 10 in the first half and had a 23-15 halftime lead.

Both teams shot 33 percent from the field. Heart River was 16 of 48 and Mott-Regent was 15 of 45.

Alexis Roth had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals for Mott-Regent. Abby Honeyman and Naomi Meier each had eight points and five rebounds. Honeyman also had three blocked shots.

The teams were nearly even in many statistical categories.

Mott-Regent held a 34-33 rebounding edge and Heart River had 11 steals to the Wildfire’s 10.

However, Mott-Regent committed 26 turnovers.

The Cougars take on Beach at 5:30 p.m. today. Mott-Regent falls into a region-qualifier game at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Their opponent will be the loser of today’s semifinal game between No. 2 seed Bowman County and No. 3 Hettinger-Scranton.

No. 3 seed Hettinger-Scranton needed a fourth-quarter rally to overcome the No. 6 seed Tigers.

Kaitlin Reitz had 16 points and five steals and Taylor Kelner had 13 points and four steals to lead Hettinger-Scranton.

New England committed 31 turnovers to the Night Hawks’ 22.

Hannah Nordby had nine points and five rebounds for the Tigers. Gabbi Hanson added eight points.

Hettinger-Scranton faces No. 2 seed Bowman County at 7 p.m. today in the semifinals. New England must wait until 5:30 p.m. Monday when it will play the loser of the semifinal game between Beach and Heart River in a region-qualifier game.
