Demons trample Dickinson boys

BISMARCK — The No. 1 seed Bismarck High boys basketball team packed on the points in the first half and never let up.
The No. 2-ranked Demons shot 55 percent from the field for a 90-41 win over Dickinson High in the West Region Tournament quarterfinals Thursday at the Bismarck Civic Center.
“They’re a very a good team and they’ve got a lot of guys that can score,” Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. “The biggest thing with us is we lost our confidence two or three minutes into the game. We just didn’t have the energy that we needed to play in a WDA game.”
Bismarck held a 49-21 lead at halftime after going 20 of 34 (59 percent) from the field. The No. 8 seed Midgets had trouble shooting 7 of 24 (29 percent).
“We couldn’t get out to their shooters fast enough,” Wilson said. “We couldn’t contain their dribble.”
The Demons (18-2) didn’t quite repeat their shooting dominance in the second half, but came close, going 16 of 31 (52 percent).
Bismarck’s leading scorer and North Dakota State basketball recruit Dexter Werner supplied 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
“Dexter didn’t get many points, because he sat a lot in the second half,” Wilson said. “They didn’t need him around.”
The Demons also had Devin Schirado go 4 of 8 from 3-point range and score 16 points. Taylor Schafer came off the bench for 14.
The Midgets’ (8-13) lone player in double-figures was Jordan Krieg with 10. The junior center grabbed four rebounds to tie for the team-high.
The Midgets have one last chance to continue their quest for a state tournament ticket. Dickinson plays No. 4 seed Bismarck Century at noon today in a loser-out game.
“It’s down to a lot of guys that have played 18 years of basketball and they are at a crossroads whether they want their season to continue or be done,” Wilson said.
