One person was killed and three injured in a Thursday collision 21 miles north of Belfield on Highway 85, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Jerry Newbold of Chikaska, Okla. was traveling north toward Watford City when he lost control of his vehicle at about 5 p.m. Thursday, according to a press release.
The road was covered with ice and snow. Newbold’s vehicle collided head-on with Michael Maresh, Dickinson, who was traveling south. Both vehicles went in the ditch.
Maresh, Newbold and his two passengers, Dustin Buess, Great Bend, Kan., and Don McHugh, also of Chikaska, were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson.
Buess was airlifted to a Bismarck hospital and later died from his injuries, Highway Patrol Lt. Norman Rudd said Friday.
Newbold and his passengers were not wearing seatbelts. Newbold was also arrested for driving under the influence, Rudd said.
The crash is under investigation.
