BISMARCK — The No. 2 seed Mandan boys basketball team went down to the wire to knock of No. 1 seed and No. 2-ranked Bismarck High.
The Braves used a quality second half to defeat the Demons 63-62 on Saturday in the West Region Tournament championship game.
Win or lose both teams are headed the Class A state tournament, which starts on March 8 in Fargo. Mandan is now the No. 1 seed to come out of the West and Bismarck is the No. 2 seed.
The Demons led at halftime 24-16, but the Braves had Devin Coyle on their side. The senior guard notched 17 points, while Erron Collins added 16. Mandan also had Jacob Watson and Aaron Janz each finishing with 11 points.
For the Demons, North Dakota State basketball recruit Dexter Werner posted a game-high 18 points and 15 rebounds. Taylor Schafer supplied 12 points, followed by Devin Schirado with 11.

The Saints used a 25-point performance from Ben Weisbeck to defeat Century in the West Region state qualifying game.
Darius Sparks chipped in 12 points, while David Neff added 10.
Patriots’ senior Tom Fraase had a game-high 29 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Jamestown boys basketball team couldn’t hold onto its slight lead in the second half.
Minot used a strong second half to defeat Jamestown 77-70 in the West Region state qualifying game.
Austin Frank led the Magicians (16-6) with 29 points including six 3-pointers. Brandon VanDusen added 15 points.
The Blue Jays (8-14) had with Danny Fischer leading the way with 19 points.
