DSU takes second at the Yellowjacket Stampede

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Dickinson State men’s and women’s rodeo team each used strong performances to finish runner-up at the Yellowjacket Stampede.

The two-day rodeo marked the Blue Hawks first competition this spring and the women nearly came away winners on Sunday.

DSU women finished with 380 points, which was just five points shy of South Dakota State (385). In third place was Black Hills State (S.D.) with 260 points.

In the women’s all-around, DSU’s Laura Waldo finished in a tie for second with Bailie Jo Smith of Iowa Central with 190 points. Danielle Schubert of South Dakota State took the all-around with 200 points.

Waldo won the goat tying with a time of 13.5 seconds, defeating Jamie Britton of Black Hills State by three-tenths of the a second.

On the men’s side, the Blue Hawks finished with 570 points, but Black Hills State was too much to handle with 750 points. In the third place was Iowa Central Community College with 520 points.

The only placer from DSU in the men’s all-around was Caleb Strecker placing fourth (70). Winning the men’s all-around was Taylor Williams of Black Hills State with 260 points.

The Blue Hawks had one individual winner in the team roping header. Turner Davis won with a time of 15 seconds. Davis defeated the runner-up in that event by over one second.

DSU gets to impress the home crowd on Saturday as the Blue Hawks host the Cowboy Challenge.
