Office equipment: Stark Co. has too much of it; Commissioners consider auctioning items off

Stark County commissioners say they want to clear county storage areas of overflowing office equipment, but are puzzled as to where items should go — can they give it away or do they need to throw it away?

Auctioning it off might be the solution, they say.

“Basically, some (office items) are in real nice shape, but they’re not sure what to do with them,” Commissioner Russ Hoff said during a meeting earlier this month.

An array of useable desks, cabinets and miscellaneous office supplies are collecting dust on county property, Hoff added.

Some commissioners cringe at the thought of tossing perfectly good resources.

“The landfill costs are getting awful expensive,” Stark County Road Superintendent Al Heiser said.

Heiser also said the equipment should be donated to a worthy organization.

Tom Henning, Stark County state’s attorney, said many schools are facing similar overflow issues.

Heiser assured commissioners that certain county entities will not accept more supplies.

Eventually, commissioners questioned whether they could hand out the collection for free.

With all other ideas falling through, Commission Chairman Ken Zander said a public handout might be the answer.

“I’m not opposed to just giving (the items) to the general public,” he said.

Commissioner Duane Wolf suggested consulting Dickinson city officials to see if the excess materials could be included in the next city auction, to which commissioners agreed.
