GLENDIVE, Mont. — The Dickinson High softball team’s bats were hot and they didn’t cool down.
The Midgets blasted 10 runs in the fifth inning en route to defeating Dawson County (Mont.) 20-7 on Friday in its season opener.
“We came out with a lot confidence,” Dickinson head coach Bill Butterfield said. “The girls were seeing the ball really well.”
Each Dickinson player had multiple hits. Briana Farnsworth and Lexi Yates, who is replacing all-state catcher Mackee Hoffmann due to injury, deposited home runs.
Not only were hits abundant for the Midgets, but each player crossed home plate.
Haley Butterfield led the Midgets (1-0) in the circle, pitching for the win. Dawson County’s Sarah Temple was charged with the loss.
“Haley threw really well,” Bill Butterfield said. “They kind of got on her in the last inning.”
Jess Priebe, Dickinson’s leadoff hitter, got on base in all five of her plate appearances. She had two singles and drew three walks.
Dawson County’s lone extra-base hit came from Ali Mittlestadt in the fifth inning.
The Midgets play their first home game of the season when they host Bismarck Century at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
“We’re just going to get back to practice and be ready for Century on Thursday,” Bill Butterfield said.
