Beautiful weather leads to high marks at Dickinson State Open

Dickinson State track and field coach Pete Stanton is a firm believer that good weather conditions can warm an athlete’s spirit.
Spirits couldn’t have got much higher Saturday afternoon during the Dickinson State Open meet at the Badlands Activities Center.
“Our athletes were just excited to go out and have this type of atmosphere, this type of weather,” Stanton said. “As a result, we had some great performances.”
The Blue Hawks had four athletes qualify for the NAIA national championship meet. However, it’s best performance may have come from one of its athletes who couldn’t compete as a member of the team.
Competing unattached, DSU’s Frederick Agbaje easily won the 100- and 200-meter sprints.
“We can hopefully get his paperwork settled and get him running this year,” Stanton said. “He trains well. He’s a tremendous talent. He’s as talented as some of the other guys we’ve had in the past.”
Agbaje, who is from Nigeria, has not been cleared to participate by the NAIA. He finished the 100 in 10.59 seconds, defeating teammate Jon Dinius’ runner-up time of 11.19, and beat former DSU runner and Bahamas national team competitor Sean Pickstock in the 200.
Agbaje ran a 21.10, which he said was his fastest 200 time to start a season. Pickstock came in at 21.48.
Agbaje and Pickstock both expect to be in contention to represent their countries in the 2012 Summer Olympics that begin this July in London.
Both times would have qualified Agbaje for the NAIA national meet, had he been eligible to compete for the Blue Hawks.
“I’m pretty sad because I’m not running for the school,” Agbaje said. “That’s why I’m here. That’s why I came all the way from Nigeria here, to run for Dickinson State. It’s quite frustrating that I’m still not eligible to run for the school. But, at the same time, I take it as a challenge.”
Andrew Knebel won the high jump and qualified for the national meet with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches and Brady Sundheim won the triple jump at 47-5¼.
DSU sophomore Nathan Magstadt battled illness but still managed to win the 110 hurdles in 15.02 seconds. However, he struggled down the stretch in his top event, the 400 hurdles. He took fourth in 57.42.
DSU won the 400 relay in 42.75 seconds and had a mixed team of its unattached runners and Pickstock take first in the 1,600 relay in 3:25.56, beating another group of Blue Hawks, who had a time of 3:28.24.
DSU’s Johnpaul Williams took a stab at a school-record height of 16 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault but couldn’t reach it. The sophomore ended up taking second place behind Kirk Capdeville, a Minot State jumper competing unattached.
They both maxed out at 15-11 with Capdeville winning on attempts.
Former DSU standout Jermaine Christie, competing unattached, won the long jump at 23-8¾.
Blue Hawks senior Tyler Schmidkuz finished second in all three of his throwing events, the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Tyler Lalim was second in the javelin.
On the women’s side, DSU sophomore Hailey Schaper edged senior teammate Jennifer Hartman in the high jump with a national-qualifying leap of 5 feet, 5 inches.
Hartman came in at 5-3 but won the triple jump at 35-9½.
Though Schaper, a Killdeer High School graduate, reached only the B-qualifying standard, she said the early start and warmer weather should help her reach that point.
“I still want to get A standard, but it’s a good feeling,” said Schaper, who added that the weather helped her today. “It helps a lot, to help keep your legs warm and not have to worry about constantly moving and keeping warm. It helps so much being nice out.”
Brianny Williams cruised to a win in the 100 hurdles in 15.48 seconds and won the long jump with national-qualifying leap of 17-9¾.
Stormie Sickler won the 800 with a time of 2:23.84. Mardee Clark won the 100 in 13.33. Kim Schulz won the javelin at 122-4.
The DSU women’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams won their races with times of 51.14 seconds and 4:06.83, respectively.
Minot State’s Sienna Dailey won three events — the 200 (26.12), 400 (58.8) and pole vault (10 feet).
Jamestown College’s Kayla Roemmich was a double winner, taking the shot put (37-11½) and discus (126-3).
Stanton said the Blue Hawks, as well as their competitors, took advantage of the conditions as he was expecting.
However, he added that it also showed the team just how much work remains.
“We may not get another day like this the rest of the year,” Stanton said. “It creates an atmosphere where we keep getting better. With that being said, we still have a lot of work to do.”
