ND lien law collects on unpaid child support

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Critics of a North Dakota law designed to collect unpaid child support say it puts an unfair burden on car dealers, but others say the law appears to be working.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Critics of a North Dakota law designed to collect unpaid child support say it puts an unfair burden on car dealers, but others say the law appears to be working.

The law created an online child support lien registry. A lien is created on real estate and titled property including vehicles owned by those on the list. Car dealers must check the registry anytime someone presents a vehicle as a trade-in.

Some say the law unfairly turns dealers into child support enforcement officers, and increases the chance that someone with a trade-in vehicle will take the business to a neighboring state.
