Elizondo hits 3 HR as DSU beats Jamestown, loses to VCSU

VALLEY CITY — Justin Elizondo hit three home runs as the Dickinson State baseball team took beat Jamestown College and fell to Valley City State on Sunday at the Dakota Athletic Conference Preseason Tournament.

Elizondo had two home runs, driving in three runs, as the Blue Hawks beat Jamestown 8-7. He tacked on three-run homer in the first inning of a 13-6 loss to the Vikings, who hosted the event at Charlie Brown Field.

Elizondo had a two-run homer in the first a double in the third and a solo shot to lead off the fifth. He finished 3-for-3 after being intentionally walked to lead off the seventh.

Jamestown reliever Kacy Gardiner gave up a single to Jonathon Mendoza that scored Elizondo and courtesy runner Caleb Burgard and tied the game 7-7.

Sam Bisson, batting at the bottom of DSU’s order, singled to left to score Mendoza for the go-ahead run and Blue Hawks senior closer Andrew Grafton faced just four batters in the bottom of the seventh go earn the save.

In their final game of the tournament, the Blue Hawks (15-13) ran up against Derek Zitzow and hot-hitting VCSU.

Zitzow struck out five, walking just one and giving up four earned runs as in a complete-game victory over the Blue Hawks.

Six different VCSU players drove in two runs, including Josh Evans, who went 4-for-5 with a solo HR and a RBI single.

Elizondo was 3-for-4 and scored two runs to finish the day 6-for-7 with six RBI and six runs scored.

The senior from Lancaster, Calif., was named DAC Player of the Week after finishing the weekend 7-for-12 with eight RBI and seven runs scored.
