Fighting off good collegiate competition is something the Dickinson State freshman is still getting used to.

Wellenstein tied Miles Community College sophomore Margo Salsbery for the medalist honors Thursday at the DSU Open at Heart River Golf Course. Each had a two-day total of 170.

“I think it makes me stronger as a player, so I can compete better,” Wellenstein said. “There’s more competition, everyone is more serious and it makes me compete harder to win.”

Wellenstein, a Dickinson High School graduate, shot an 81 on Wednesday in whipping winds but dropped to an 89 on Thursday as a stiff breeze blew from the south. Salsbury had an 83-87–170.

Though Wellenstein played as an individual, the Blue Hawk women claimed a six-stroke victory over Jamestown College in a two-team competition.

DSU had a two-day total of 372-382–754. Jamestown climbed back Thursday to finish at 389-371–760.

“The women do what they need to do every tournament we go to,” DSU coach Cory Fehringer said. “The first day they start out strong and the second day they do just enough. I’d like to see them come out a little better on the second day.”

Caitlin Hurlock finished in a tie for sixth with 185, Stef Bohrer and Paige Kamminga shot a 190 and Laura Duppong had a 192 to score for the DSU women. Brittany Backen added a 193.

Jamestown and Valley City State’s men both improved substantially from Wednesday to Thursday, but finished with a tie for the team win with a team score of 627.

DSU was nine stroke out of first with a 327-309–636.

“On the men’s side, you’d like a little bit better showing the first day out,” Fehringer said. “The second day, again, we came back and played well from top to bottom. But the first day really (set) us back.”

Valley City State had a three-stroke lead after Wednesday with a 321 but improved just 15 strokes Thursday. The Jimmies improved 21 strokes and totaled a 303 to force the tie.

Valley City State’s Taylor Henrickson and Jamestown College’s Jack Bietz tied for medalist.

Henrickson shot a 78-74–152 and Bietz had a 75-77–152.

DSU was led by Brian Quintus, who stayed steady with a 79-77–156 to finish tied for fifth, and Tony Elliot, who improved eight strokes Thursday for a seventh-place finish at 83-75–158.

“There’s definitely room for improvement,” Elliot said. “Coming into the first tournament, our expectations weren’t too high. But, for the most part, everyone improved the second day, which is good and I guess we’ll just go from there.”

Though wind can be a great equalizer on a golf course, Fehringer said the teams felt lucky just to be playing.

“I just think the biggest deal for both coaches and players is getting out early this year, not having rain, snow, sleet to deal with,” he said. “Wind obviously causes its own issues, but I think everybody is just happy to get out and play.”
