Against the wind: Midgets, Titans not hampered by breeze at first home meet of year

Temperatures changed, showers came and went but one thing never changed Tuesday at the Jack Carlson Booster track and field meet — the wind.

Temperatures changed, showers came and went but one thing never changed Tuesday at the Jack Carlson Booster track and field meet — the wind.

A stiff south wind swirled through the Badlands Activities Center bowl for much of the day, but it still wasn’t enough to slow down the teams just happy to be outside and racing in mid-April.

“It’s a different luxury,” Dickinson High co-coach Jay Schobinger said.

Bismarck Century’s boys won nine events as it claimed the team win and the Patriots’ girls won four events to earn the top spot despite Minot High winning seven events.

However, it was Dickinson’s meet and its athletes took advantage of the chance to compete.

In the 100 meters, moved to the stadium’s backstretch so runners could go with the wind, Dickinson’s duo of Mason Frank and Jace Dukart finished first and second, respectively, with state-qualifying hand-held times of 11.44 seconds.

Frank was awarded the win based on a slight advantage in his hand-held time. The senior stuck his nose out over the finish line just ahead of his sophomore teammate.

Frank said the 100 is always a blur, but remembered “jumping the gun, getting a great start, concentrating down the lane and not really thinking about the other competitors.”

Dickinson’s 3,200 relay team of Brett Braunagel, Mike Porter, Dallas Zastoupil and Joseph Sickler fell 3.38 seconds short of qualifying for state.

In the 400 relay, Dickinson missed by two-hundredths of a second. The Midgets’ team of Frank, Zastoupil, Michael Cherwinski and Dukart ran a 45.46.

Century won with a 45.43. The state-qualifying time is 45.44.

Sickler said the team’s relays are steadily improving.

“They’ll be stronger eventually,” Sickler said. “We’ve got to work on our handoffs.”

Sickler won another event but fell just short of a state-qualifying time.

He battled Dickinson Trinity’s Paul Gardner down the stretch in the 800 meters and pulled away late to win with a time of 2:03.01. Gardner was second at 2:04.59.

“It was really windy. It was pretty fun,” said Sickler, who ran with Gardner, a senior at New England High School, on the Midgets’ cross country team. “Paul was pushing me a lot.”

Gardner, who helped Trinity’s 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams place third and fourth, respectively, said it was good for him and his teammates to see Class A competition after attending two Class B meets.

However, Gardner said the wind — the one adversary he was expecting to dominate the day — didn’t turn out to be so bad, even in the 800 where the racers turned into the stiff breeze twice down the track’s frontstretch.

“I was expecting it to be really bad,” Gardner said. “But by the time we started competing against each other, I was more focused on the race. It was back and forth and it was really exciting so I didn’t think about the wind that much.

“All day I was worried about it, then it came to race time and you say, whatever. You get down and race and compete hard.”

Bowman County junior Brandon Fischer tied Sidney (Mont.) senior Josh Torgerson for the win in the high jump. Both leapt 6 feet.

Hazen’s Tyler Parker won the javelin with a state-qualifying throw of 165-8.

Bismarck Century’s Drew Wiseman had a solid day, earning state-qualifying marks in three events.

He won the 200 in 22.14 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 40.05 and helped the Patriots’ 1,600 relay team cruise to a win by more than 10 seconds with a time of 3:34.17.

Century’s Conrad Schwarzkopf easily won the shot put (54-6) and the discus (174-11).

On the girls side, Minot High junior Morgan Milbrath was her usual standout self, winning the 100 with a time of 12.34 seconds, the 200 in 25.34 and helping the 400 and 800 relay teams to wins in 51.88 and 1:47.46, respectively.

Finishing runner-up to Milbrath in both the 100 and the 200 was Bowman County’s Erika Olson, who had state-qualifying times of 12.74 and 26.54 seconds, respectively.

Minot’s Jayd Eggert won the discus (134-2) and the javelin (119-1).

Mandan’s Chelsea Peterson had qualifying times in the 100 hurdles (15.94) and 300 hurdles (47.84).

Trinity senior Andrea Jirges was her team’s lone state qualifier. She finished fifth in the long jump at 16-6½.
