DSU split with Mayville

MAYVILLE — The Dickinson State baseball team squeaked away with an opening win, but couldn’t nail down the sweep.

The Blue Hawks opened up with a 2-1 win over Mayville State, but the Comets returned the favor in the night cap with a 6-2 win Saturday.

Erik Bastio took the mound for DSU and threw six innings, allowing no runs and striking out two.

Tanner Newman went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Jonathan Mendoza supplied the other RBI for the Blue Hawks (18-16). Derek Carley also chipped in a hit.

For the Comets (22-14), Dillon Lundin had the lone RBI after a home run in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Mayville State’s big hit came off the bat of pinch hitter Duell Higbe, who hit a 3-run home run that proved to be the deciding factor in the game.

DSU continues action on the road in another doubleheader against Mayville State at noon today.
