Dickinson High boys golfers stay tight at Minot AFB

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE — Before the season started the Dickinson High boys golf team talked about how winning was going to be a team effort.

That effort was there as Dickinson’s top four golfers shot within three strokes of each other at the Minot Invitational on Tuesday at the Minot Air Force Base Golf Course.

“They played really relaxed and they were really focused,” Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said. “Overall I saw them hitting the ball really solid.”

Luke Hanel led the Midgets with an 80, while Tanner Halter added an 81 and Austin Fournier and Shay Ridl each had an 83. All of them finished just outside the top 10.

“We took four low ’80s scores and I’m pretty pleased with that,” Berglund said.

Dickinson finished with a team score of 327, which was 27 strokes off winners Bismarck High (300). Bismarck St. Mary’s came in runner-up with a 304.

Jake DeForest of St. Mary’s won medalist, shooting a 70 and beating Nick Nustad and Trenton Schwehr of Bismarck by three strokes.

The Midgets get a couple days of practice before hosting the Dickinson Invitational at Heart River Golf Course at 10 a.m. Friday.

“It gives the boys an idea on what they really need to focus on,” Berglund said. “Now our practices need a little more focus on things we need to work on after we went out and played today.”
