Letter: Last oil boom and bust shows not to get ahead of ourselves; vote no

As farmers in rural Hettinger County, and members of the North Dakota Farmer Union Organization, we support a “no” vote on Measure 2. It is simply unrealistic.

The issues we have in Hettinger County are far different from the issues in Walsh County or Williams County, which is why we have local entities to address local issues. At the local level, we do not want to get into the party politics that Bismarck must deal with during the Legislature.

If there were anything to be learned from the last boom and bust cycle, it would be not to get ahead of ourselves.

We need to think long term, not what would be convenient for North Dakota at this moment.

We need to think about what is best for our children and grandchildren —10, 15 and 20 years down the road.

So rather than drastically shifting the tax burden for future generations, we would suggest voting “no” on June 12 for rural communities and the future of North Dakota.
