Weather can’t slow Hawks: Magstadt wins both hurdle events at Blue Hawk Games

Weather doesn’t seem to faze Nathan Magstadt. When the Dickinson State sophomore feels good, he runs good.

Magstadt fared better running against wind and through drizzle Friday than he did two weeks ago during DSU’s first home meet of the season on a unseasonably beautiful day. That day, however, he was competing despite cold-like symptoms.

Health setbacks wouldn’t keep Magstadt down at the Blue Hawk Games track and field meet at the Badlands Activities Center though as he was one of four athletes to win two individual events.

“The last couple races … I’ve been getting beat, running OK times, but not where I’d like to be,” Magstadt said. “More than anything, today is kind of a confidence booster. I still have it.”

Magstadt edged the University of Mary’s Chase Dixon by less than a second in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, his standout events, with times of 15.13 seconds in the 110 hurdles and 54.99 in the 400 hurdles, far from his personal bests but improvements considering the poor conditions.

“Performance-wise, the wind affected some of the performances,” DSU head coach Pete Stanton said.

DSU women’s javelin thrower Kim Schulz, a NAIA national meet veteran, struggled despite winning her event. Her best throw was 122 feet, 1½ inch.

“I took first, but I’m not throwing as well as I’d normally like to throw,” Schulz said. “I guess I’m just going to keep pushing. I have three meets left before nationals, so push through and just see if I can get that national qualification.”

DSU sophomores Andrew Knebel and Hailey Schaper won the men’s and women’s high jump with leaps of 6-6 and 5-5, respectively. Sophomore Brady Sundheim flew to a win in the triple jump at 47-3¾.

Sophomore Brittany Young easily won the 1,500 meters in 4:48.03.

“Overall, we were very pleased with our effort on both the men’s and women’s side,” Stanton said. “We have some women that are just doing a nice job of going out, competing and getting it done.”

U-Mary tallied the most men’s and women’s team points. The Marauder men had 176 team points compared to the Blue Hawks’ 141½, though DSU had numerous men’s runners competing unattached that would have factored greatly into their total.

Fred Agbaje, the Nigerian sophomore who Stanton said will likely compete unattached for the Blue Hawks the rest of this season, won both the 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.71 and 21.42 seconds. He edged former DSU sprinter Sean Pickstock by two-hundredths of a second in the 200.

Pickstock also claimed an easy victory in the 400 in 47.78 seconds.

Abdi Ismail, another unattached DSU sophomore, edged DSU junior Robert Quintero in the 1,500. Ismail finished in 4:05.48, a one-hundredth of a second victory over Quintero. DSU’s Dustin Sandbak was third at 4:06.94.

“Our men did a good job of being consistent,” Stanton said.

The U-Mary women ran away with the win at 228 points. DSU was second at 116.

Marauders freshman Tess Johnson was a part of three victories. She won the 400 hurdles (1:04.09) and long jump (18-4½) and helped the 1,600 relay team to a win in 3:59.25. U-Mary junior Melissa Walker won the 100 hurdles (14.83 seconds) and triple jump (40 feet).

Brienna Lynch, a former Dickinson High standout who went on to graduate from Bismarck Century High School, won outraced two teammates to win the 800 meters in 2:16.31.

In a season full of beautiful spring days, Stanton said he had a feeling the weather wouldn’t be good for the meet. It rarely is.

“It’s a little bit more typical Blue Hawk Games weather,” he said with a smile. “We’ve talked about it all along. We’ve got pretty spoiled getting two beautiful days in late March and early April. None of the athletes complain about it. We worked our tails off and I was real proud of them.”
