Damien Bearden has taken more than five years of experience in the construction industry and opened a business in Dickinson.

D & G Specialties LLC offers carpentry, insulation, deck construction along with other services.

If part of a customer’s project doesn’t fall under Bearden’s range of expertise, he will find a subcontractor to get the job done.

“We also do project management to make sure that the subs show up and you get your nice little dream addition, office, hobby room, or whatever it may be, done in a timely manner and at a pretty good price,” he said.

The Modesto, Calif. transplant moved to Dickinson about 10 years ago.

Bearden particularly enjoys “finish carpentry” which includes hanging doors, installing trim and railings.

“You build it and step back and it’s just beautiful,” Bearden said.

After getting a taste of construction there was no turning back.

“Every little piece will have a history,” he said. “This is going to be somebody’s house. Some kid’s going to grow up here and later on he’s going to be looking back in adulthood and going ‘I grew up in this house.’”

The personal touch D & G Specialties offers makes the company stand out, Bearden added.

“I’m more based on the customer than just ‘oh well this is just another job,’” Bearden said. “I will care if somebody doesn’t show up because you have certain guests coming over or if you have small children I take the care to make sure they’re safe.”

His customer Nikki St. John said this was particularly important for her when remodeling her dance studio in Dickinson.

“He was very meticulous with making sure there were no nails on the floor because none of my kids wear shoes,” she said. “With the finished product we’ve had a lot of compliments.”

St. John called Bearden for that project after hiring him to construct a “beautiful deck” at her home.

“He was over within a week,” she said. “Even though he was busy.”

Bearden got both jobs done quickly and provided a quality finished product, St. John said.

“I’m noticing people that have been here for a long time, with the oil boom coming in, their prices are going up but their service and their customer service is going south,” she said.

That wasn’t the case with Bearden.

“He’s family friendly and oriented to the people,” St. John said. “He’s not just there to make a buck.”

Bearden wanted to open his business in Dickinson not only because of demand, but also because he and his wife, Tara — who does paperwork for the company — call the city home.

“It’s an amazing community and it’s given me a lot so I figure I’ll give something back,” Bearden said.
