BISMARCK — The Dickinson High baseball team wound up in an early hole to start the game, but were able to drag themselves out.
The Midgets overcame a 6-0 deficit after the first inning to defeat Bismarck St. Mary’s 9-7 in the West Region game of a doubleheader before dropping the nonconference game 8-4 on Tuesday.
“I give the boys a lot of credit, because we told them that it’s going to be tough to get six back right away,” Dickinson head coach Pete Dobitz said. “The score matters after seven innings, not at the end of the first.”
Taylor Kraenzel was on the pitching mound for Dickinson. He lasted four innings allowing six runs. Dobitz wanted to pitch him longer, but Kraenzel threw 30 pitches in the first inning.
James Kary relieved Kraenzel and pitched three masterful innings after a tough start at home against Jamestown.
“He did a great job of shutting them down and getting a win for us,” Dobitz said.
Dickinson junior Alex Huschka went 2-for-2.
The Midgets committed three errors in the game, all in the first inning. The Saints had six errors.
In the second game, St. Mary’s used a five-run fourth inning to ensure a victory.
Tanner Hopfauf led the Midgets with two hits and a RBI while Mark Erickson added a pair of hits.
Andrew Thorson and Preston Tescher each had three hits and a RBI, while Tyler Farnias knocked in two hits and two RBIs.
The Midgets host West Region opponent Minot at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
