MAYVILLE — The Dickinson State baseball team found itself in two sixth inning predicaments Friday.
The Blue Hawks gave up two four-run sixth innings as Mayville State won 6-2 and Valley City State won 5-4 during the opening round of the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament.
In the first game against Mayville State, DSU (21-25) held a 2-1 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth. The Comets first four batters got on base. Travis Ahlgren helped his team take the lead for good with a two-RBI single to right.
MSU (31-16) tagged on two more in the inning and added an insurance run in the seventh. Tanner Newman took the loss for the Blue Hawks, while Joe Ferreira grabbed the win.
Jonathon Mendoza led DSU going 2-for-4 with a RBI, followed by Sam Bisson with two hits.
In the second game, DSU maintained a 4-1 lead over VCSU heading into the top of the sixth. That’s when the Vikings bats got hot.
VCSU (12-31) started off the inning with four straight singles and scored its first run of the sixth on a Dan Buehner RBI single to right-center. The Vikings tagged the Blue Hawks for three more runs including the final run a wild pitch by Chas Allen.
Allen was pinned with the loss, while Ronnie Blagg went the distance throwing seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five.
Brock Murphy led the DSU bats going 2-for-3 and scored a run. Jacob Muir and Caleb Burgard each went 1-for-3, with a RBI and scoring a run.
The Blue Hawks finish the DAC tournament against Jamestown College at 10 a.m. today.
