MAYVILLE — The Dickinson State softball team piled on the runs early at the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday.
The Blue Hawks scored five runs in the first inning and added three in the fourth en route to an 8-7 win over VCSU at Portland Field.
DSU freshman pitcher Regan Lawrence took the win tossing seven innings, allowing seven runs and striking out 12.
The Blue Hawks (25-21) big push in the first innings came off the bat of Janell LaRont. The freshman shortstop blasted a three-run home run to spark a five-run first inning. LaRont finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
The Vikings (25-19) didn’t go away quite slowly chipping away at the lead throughout the first four innings. VCSU eventually took a 6-4 lead in the fourth.
DSU didn’t back down scoring three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Jessica Huseby went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Lawrence helped out her cause with two hits and driving in one run.
The Vikings saw a hint a power for Cyndi Figol and Emma Nelson each knocking home runs. Figol went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jane Pettit and Courtney Shadlock each had two hits.
The Blue Hawks continue play at the DAC Tournament at 11 a.m. today against Jamestown College.
